Alternative medicine can be described as healing practices that are not used in conventional medicine. In conventional medicine, doctors usually work with drugs and surgeries. What types of practices may fall into alternative healing medicine? We can consider acupuncture, nutritional therapy, oriental herbs, and even chiropractics are considered alternative practices of medicine. We will not list all of them here, but we will give you ten of them besides the ones we just mention so you can see the variety of unconventional medicine.

  •  Colon hydrotherapy
  • Qigong
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Yoga
  • Moxibustion
  • Traditional Japanese medicine
  • Acupressure
  • Magnet therapy
  • Energy medicine
  • Cupping therapy

There are plenty of more natural healing medicines to list, but for now, we will focus on only the essentials.

Alternative medical practices, do they work?

One of the main problems of alternative healing practices is that many people in the U.S and other western countries do not know the way each of these therapies for healing work. The level of effectiveness between different types of alternative treatments varies. Needle therapy has had over 700 studies researching the benefits with pretty positive results.

We in the Traditional Chinese Medicine field try to educate our patients about how we have to be licensed to be able to perform our healing. When you look for Acupuncture Miami clinics like ours, we are well prepared to practice our craft with great success. Like with a lot of professions the more experienced an acupuncturist is, the more success he probably will have.

Around 35% to 40% of adults are using or have used some type of alternative therapy. The success and the education that wellness clinics like Dr. Sontag’s have has brought increased popularity of these type of treatments in Miami and the U.S. Also the use of drugs with too many side effects have turn people to these type of medical treatments.  A lot of clinics are offering complementary medicine which promotes both conventional and alternative. This type of new medical practice shows that even regular doctors are beginning to accept the effectiveness of this mistreated medical practice.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)

yin and yang

The history of TCM dates back 2,500 years in the Shang dynasty. Herbal medicine, acupuncture, and many more practices fall into the category of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The philosophy of this type of medicine revolves around the Ying Yang.

This ancient concept invented by the Chinese revolves on dark and bright, negative and positive. What the philosophy says is that the universe always going to have both a negative and a positive force, which might work together or separated. There is a lot more that goes into this ancient way of healing like the Five Phases theory.

We will touch on more types of medicines in our future blog posts.
